Who Square 1 may help

Square 1 is not for everyone at every visit, but it can be useful if you:

  • Feel your pain or niggles keep returning despite usual treatment.
  • Notice that you feel “out of balance” or asymmetric when you run, lift or play sport.
  • Have old injuries and compensations that seem to affect how you move, even though current scans look fine.
  • Want to explore how your nervous system might be influencing your movement patterns, not just your muscles and joints.

It is designed to complement your existing chiropractic care, sports massage and rehabilitation, rather than replace them.

What happens in a Square 1 session?

A Square 1 session is calm, interactive and involves you actively holding certain positions while gentle pressure is applied. Typically, Dr Hewitson will:

  • Use specific neuro‑muscle response tests to see which directions or positions your nervous system currently treats as “safe” or “unsafe”.
  • Identify “layers” of compensation where your body may be protecting certain movements by changing how you load other areas.
  • Apply targeted isometric holds and subtle inputs to help reset how your nervous system responds to those movements.
  • Re‑test to see whether your system is now tolerating those directions more easily.

Most people experience this as a series of short holds and checks, rather than anything forceful or painful.

How Square 1 fits with your chiropractic care

Square 1 neurological testing is one more tool Dr Hewitson can use alongside chiropractic adjustments, soft‑tissue work, exercises and, where relevant, running or golf coaching. The aim is to:

  • Address deeper movement compensations that might sit behind recurring symptoms.
  • Help your body organise movement more efficiently, so you feel more stable and coordinated.
  • Support the benefits of your usual treatment by working with the nervous system as well as the muscles and joints.

It is not a replacement for medical neurological testing where serious disease or nerve damage is suspected; in those cases, your GP or specialist remains responsible for investigations and diagnosis.

Is Square neurological testing 1 right for me?

You do not need to decide this in advance. At your chiropractic appointment, Dr Hewitson can talk through your symptoms, goals and history, and suggest if and when Square 1 neurological testing might be a useful part of your plan. It will only be used where appropriate and always alongside clear explanation and feedback from you about how it feels.

Frequently asked questions

Is Square 1 painful?

Square 1 neurological testing uses gentle muscle response tests and isometric holds, so it should not be painful. Most people experience it as light pressure and short holds in different positions, with plenty of time to give feedback during the session.

How is Square 1 different from a normal chiropractic treatment?

A standard chiropractic session focuses mainly on how your joints and muscles are moving and feeling, using hands‑on treatment and exercises. Square 1 adds an extra layer by looking at how your nervous system is organising movement, using specific response tests to identify compensation patterns and then working to “reset” them alongside your usual care.

Do I need a separate appointment just for Square 1?

In many cases, Square 1 is integrated into your regular chiropractic session if it seems appropriate for your goals. Sometimes it may be helpful to book a specific, longer Square 1 appointment so there is more time to explore your movement patterns in detail, and Dr Hewitson will discuss this option with you if he feels it would be useful.
