Why your posture is important as you age.
As we age, our spine undergoes changes that can affect its function and cause pain. Some of the most common causes of low back pain in older adults are degeneration of the spinal discs, joints, and other structures, as well as inflammation, muscle strain, and injury.
Low back pain can interfere with daily activities, reduce quality of life, and increase the risk of other health problems. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent and treat low back pain, and one of them is chiropractic.
Chiropractic is a form of complementary and alternative medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, especially those related to the spine.
Within treatments I will use my hands or special instruments to apply controlled force to the spinal joints, with the aim of restoring normal motion, alignment, and function. This is called a spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustment.
Spinal manipulation can help relieve low back pain by reducing inflammation, improving blood flow, relaxing muscles, and releasing endorphins (natural painkillers). Spinal manipulation can also correct spinal misalignments that may cause nerve compression or irritation, leading to pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the lower extremities.
By restoring the integrity of the nervous system, chiropractic can enhance the body’s ability to heal itself.
Chiropractic can also help prevent low back pain by improving posture, flexibility, strength, and balance. During a treatment session I may recommend exercises, stretches, ergonomic advice, nutritional counselling, and lifestyle modifications to help a patient maintain optimal spinal health.
Chiropractic can also complement other treatments for low back pain, such as medication, physical therapy, acupuncture, or surgery. However within sessions I utilise all these skills for patients to get the most out of their appointment.
Chiropractic is generally safe and effective for low back pain in older adults. However, it is not suitable for everyone. Some people may have contraindications or complications that make spinal manipulation risky or inappropriate. These include severe osteoporosis, spinal fractures, infections, tumours, bleeding disorders, or spinal cord injuries. Therefore, it is important to share as much information as possible within your history taking and physical examination to avoid these issues and get the best care you can.
If you are interested in trying chiropractic for your low back pain, you should book in a session with myself to see how much I can help.
Low back pain is a common and debilitating condition that affects many older adults. However, it does not have to limit your life or happiness. By taking care of your spine and seeking chiropractic care when needed, you can reduce your pain and improve your function. Chiropractic can help you live life to the full with a healthy spine.
