Tail bone pain is pain that occurs at the bottom of the spine. Common symptoms for this condition include a dull ache, sometimes sharp, difficulty sitting, limited movement standing and bending, going to the toilet for a number 2 and having sexual intercourse. If you are experincing any of these symptoms then chiropractic care maybe able to help alleviate some of them.
Some of the most common causes for tailbone pain are pregnancy and childbirth due to the changes to structure. Trauma to the area from an injury, accident or fall onto the buttocks. Prolonged strain on the area from sitting for a long period of time on a bike or driving. This is a common complaint amogst cyclists and truck drivers who drive for extended periods of time.
Poor posture is one of the most common causes seen in todays age with more people working a desk job than ever before with limited movement causing pressure build up to the area.
Being over or under weight has an affect on the amount of strain the area takes. With being overweight the heavier you are the more stress placed on the skeleton. Underweight is usually caused from eating disorders which also affect the health of the skeleton resulting in this issue.
Whether you are suffering from any of these causes it causes inflammation to the area which affects the surrounding nerves and muscle tissue sending pain signals to the brain resulting in discomfort and prolonged experiences of suffering.
In clinic I address the issue of the spine being placed under stress focusing on mobility and restoring movement. I will also work on ensuring nerve stress is reduced and work on the surrounding tissue to make sure the area is capmed down from inflammation.
In order to reduce pain round the tailbone area my job is to make sure that the spine is in alignment and not placing unnecessary pressure where it shouldn’t and that the muscles around the area are supporting and not hindering.
I can achieve this using soft tissue methods like graston and cupping as well as doing spinal adjustments and mobilisations. The main area to be worked on is the pelvis to make sure it isn’t misaligned and restore its function taking pressure off of ligaments and other joints.
Once the area has been relieved of symptomatic causes it is then my job to give strengthening exercises to the area in order to reduce the chances of the injury reocurring.
If you or someone you know is suffering from tailbone pain then book in to get your rehab underway.
